Music at Macworld

Last week I made my annual pilgrimmage to Macworld Expo. The show has shrunk considerably since Apple pulled out two years ago, and the emphasis on the expo floor was mostly on iPhone and iPad accessories. Fortunately, the show also featured several musical performances, which I was glad to attend and document.

On Friday, San Francisco-based cellist and composer Zoë Keating gave a performance that featured live-looping, with the form of the songs pre-programmed, so she didn't have to constantly hit foot pedals.

After her performance she held a Q&A session at the Berklee College of Music booth on the main expo floor.

On Saturday, Jonathan Mann and the Rock Cookie Bottoms performed. Jonathan has been writing and recording a song every single day for over two years! He performed many songs about Apple personalities and technology, to the delight of the audience.

I recognized Jonathan's keyboard player, David Douglas, as I had shot him before at events at 111 Minna Gallery and the Beale St. Bar and Grill.

Finally, back at the Berklee College of Music booth on Saturday, the Advanced Jazz Band from the Urban School of San Francisco gave a performance. Berklee staff recorded the music live in Logic Pro as a demonstration of multitrack recording.

I'm sure I'll be back next year for Macworld Expo 2012! I'm happy to live in San Francisco, a city abundant in both music and technology.
